Our people are passionate about making a genuine difference. We work collaboratively, value innovation and integrity, and are committed to delivering services that protect and enhance the wellbeing of our community. If you're looking for a role where your work has real impact, this is your opportunity to join a team that helps keep our Shire safe, sustainable and thriving.

About the Role

As a Compliance Officer, you'll play a pivotal role in protecting the health, safety, amenity and environmental standards of the Narrabri Shire community. This is a diverse and rewarding position for someone who enjoys being out in the field, solving problems, investigating complaints and working closely with residents, businesses and government agencies to achieve positive outcomes. Reporting to Manager Regulatory Compliance, you'll be responsible for delivering a proactive and responsive compliance service while balancing education, customer service and enforcement activities. No two days are the same, with opportunities to work across a broad range of regulatory and environmental matters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Investigating customer requests, complaints and compliance matters across the Shire.
  • Conducting inspections and gathering evidence for regulatory investigations and enforcement actions.
  • Preparing and issuing notices, orders, approvals and correspondence in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Monitoring and enforcing compliance relating to public health, environmental protection and pollution control.
  • Managing compliance matters involving companion animals, stray livestock, unauthorised camping, roadside vendors and vehicles in public places.
  • Investigating illegal dumping, littering, overgrown land and nuisance activities.
  • Administering approvals and regulatory requirements associated with environmental and public health functions.
  • Maintaining accurate records, reports and registers in accordance with legislative and Council requirements.
  • Providing professional advice and education to the community regarding regulatory obligations and compliance standards.
  • Representing Council in regulatory and compliance matters when required.

This role is ideal for a motivated professional who enjoys working independently, making sound decisions and having a direct impact on the livability, safety and sustainability of the community. For further information on the role, please see the Position Description.

For all further enquiries, please contact Landon Brady, Manager Regulatory Compliance, on (02) 6799 6866.

About You

You're a confident and professional problem-solver who enjoys working with people, investigating issues and achieving practical outcomes for the community. You understand that effective compliance is about more than enforcement. It's about building relationships, educating stakeholders, exercising sound judgement and applying legislation fairly and consistently. You thrive in a role that offers variety and autonomy, whether you're responding to community concerns, conducting inspections, investigating environmental and public health matters, or preparing evidence and documentation to support compliance action when required.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in regulatory enforcement, compliance, public health, environmental services or a related field.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and statutory requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to confidently engage with residents, businesses and stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently while managing competing priorities.
  • Well-developed conflict resolution and negotiation skills, allowing you to navigate challenging situations professionally and achieve positive outcomes.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to contribute positively within a team environment.

Most importantly, you'll be someone who can balance compassion with accountability, communicate with confidence, and take pride in contributing to a safe, healthy and well-managed community. This role will suit someone who enjoys being out in the field, making informed decisions and seeing the direct impact of their work across Narrabri Shire.
